Boudica | by John Davies and Bruce Robinson |
| £9.95 | ISBN: 978 0946148 87 5 | |
| The most readable and up to date story of what we really know of Celtic heroine Boudica. After the death of her husband Prasutagus she would lead a revolt against the invaders that shook the Roman Empire to its core. Colchester, London and St Albans all fell to the Icenian warriors before a final confrontation in the English Midlands restored Roman power. Myth, invention and mystery surround her life. This fully illustrated book concentrates on just what we do know about the time in which she lived - and how modern archaeology is enabling us to take a considered view of the facts and strip away a little of the fiction that has grown over the years. It will stand as a popular introduction to a lady of great power and influence, much of it beyond her own time, and it looks with enthusiasm towards what archaeology might hope to discover in the future. You can click John Davies and Bruce Robinson to hear the authors introduce the book. (paperback 96 pages) |

Boudica To Raedwald East Anglia‘s Relations With Rome | by John Fairclough |
| £29.50 | ISBN: 978 0 9539680 3 9 | |
| Boudica and Raedwald are two of the dominant characters in the early history of East Anglia. What do we know about them, and about the thread of continuity that links them? How close did Boudica come to driving the Roman army out of Britain in AD61? What influence did four centuries of Roman rule have on Raedwald, whose grave ship at Sutton Hoo contained such a fabulous treasure? In seeking answers to these questions John Fairclough examines the discoveries of archaeologists over the past hundred years and describes how the hoards of coins and valuable gold and silver treasure unearthed by them and by metal detectorists provide evidence of significant wealth in the region nearly two thousand years ago. What was the origin of that wealth? And what do we know of the people who accumulated that wealth? (paperback 270 pages) |

The Restoration And Development Of The Bedford Ouse | by W B Carter |
| £7.95 | ISBN: 1 904136 25 7 | |
| In the 17th century the Bedford Ouse had been made navigable to Bedford by the building of locks and staunches. Barges started to decline with the advent of railways, and the owner of the navigation rights, through various problems, closed the navigation in 1900. In 1933 the Great Ouse Catchment Board was formed, mainly to improve land drainage and restored the river to Tempsford, when the War broke out. After the War, boatyards started to spring up but there was some doubt whether the locks etc. could be maintained as there were no more monies available. In the late ‘70s, the river was opened to Bedford. The book shows photographs of the locks that had fallen into decay and how they are today. Many of the small boatyards which had in early days only a few rowing boats and punts are now marinas, and old photographs illustrate their development. (paperback 85 pages) |

There‘s A Story That My Mother Told... | by Ruby Lanham |
| £11.95 | ISBN: 978 0 9555947 0 0 | |
| This is the true story of Ruby‘s life as told by herself and in her words. Born Ruby Alleston 27 Dec 1905 at Bures on the Essex/Suffolk Border, she tells of her love and continuous involvement with horses through the hard times of the agricultural depression until the time she left home in 1935 to get married. It was a time when she said, “if you did not have anything you were lucky because you did not have the worry of it for as sure as god made little green apples you would loose it. It was a time when you could walk on land from Cambridge to Clacton that nobody would take. A time when it was driving honest to goodness hard working farmers shany and they were being turned out of their homes and committed to the workhouse. We had a dog tied up everywhere.” There were added hardships of loosing horses, poisoned, gored by the bull or at the hands of the ‘professional’ vet through to successes in the show ring, hunting, point to pointing with Swanee the fast but nappy mare who like Sparks was one of the 2.5 million horses that went to the 1914-18 war and was one of the one in a hundred that came back. To the joyous outcome of buying a lame foal for a maiden bid at Tattersalls Newmarket auction. Set against the continuous conflict with her cantankerous father who having been brought up with a silver spoon in his mouth took to his bed leaving Ruby this extraordinary commitment to save the family and homestead.
